The church of St. Paul’s was built above this grotto, where Christians say St. Paul sought refuge after the storm that crashed his boat on to the beaches of Malta. Believers say he preached from this site as well, which would have been safe for the early Christian converts. Paul set foot on Malta in approximately 60 A.D. and the Maltese became some of the first Christians outside of the Holy Lands. The island remains almost 98% Christian to this day. The story of St. Paul’s shipwreck and 3 months in Malta can be found in the Bible, in Acts 27:27 through 28:11.
We had the church and the grotto to ourselves on our visit.
