Every year on the first weekend of October, the cheers of the crowds and the sound of thundering hooves can be heard at the Hippodrome de Longchamp in Paris. This year, the races will take place on Saturday, October 5 with gates opening at 12:00 and on Sunday, October 6 for the big purse races, gates open at 11:00.
Although the big contenders race on Sunday, Sole Traveling Mama prefers taking her children to the races on Saturday when it is more low-key. There is the thrill of the racing but without the long bathroom and food lines. Additionally, there’s no chance of losing your child in the crowds, it’s easy to see the horses and jockeys in the warmup ring and with the owners and to get up close to the gorgeous trophies and winner’s cups.
Sole Traveling Mama always likes to add an educational component to her travel, and the betting is a great way to teach percentages and statistics. STM gives each child 10 euros at the start of the day to bet however they choose. (Minimum bets are 2 euros). Pictured here are two of her daughters with their winning tickets! Entry free on Saturday to ladies in hats. It’s a great family day!
